MOSCATO
The name of this vine derives from that given to its grapes by the Latins called “Apianae” by Columella and Plinio and “Apicae” by Catone to stress the fact they were the preferred food for bees due to their golden berries rich in sugar.
Suitable to the climate of the Tortona region, Moscato vines have been raised on the hilly marly- calcareous grounds for over two centuries. Tortona rural bans published in 1776 and kept in Tortona archives cite the vines raised in this area as follows:: those “agrestic, or special grapes, such as moscatello, passeretta, lugliatica, malvasia, uva renna, and similar grapes..”
